Fiber optic technology has long been used in long-haul networks due to its high performance over long distances \u2014 fiber can travel as far as 40 miles without losing signal strength.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now fiber is increasingly being used in metro and access networks instead of copper. And because copper can only carry a gigabit signal about 300 feet, many businesses choose to continue the fiber connection all the way to their premises \u2014&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.archfibernetworks.com\/fiber-to-the-x-explained-your-options-for-bridging-the-last-mile-to-your-building\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">called a fiber to the premises (FTTP) configuration<\/a>&nbsp;\u2014 to avoid losing signal strength. In essence, fiber optic networks are limited only by the technology used to transmit and receive signals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In an ideal world, every phone, smart sensor and mobile device could be directly connected to the fiber backbone \u2014 but that would limit the mobility of the devices. That\u2019s where 5G wireless network technology comes in. 5G networks will essentially be designed to bridge the short distance between a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/searchnetworking.techtarget.com\/feature\/Understand-the-basics-of-5G-wireless-networks\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">mobile device (as in 5G mobile services) or business (as in 5G fixed broadband)<\/a>&nbsp;and the fiber backbone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The essential relationship between fiber optics and 5G wireless networks<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>5G wireless small cells and their fiber wireline networks will never be mutually exclusive. To understand the relationship between wireless and wireline networks, it\u2019s helpful to think of a city\u2019s network in physiological terms: 5G will function splendidly as the capillaries (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ciena.com\/insights\/articles\/Primer-Mobile-backhaul-vs-mobile-fronthaul_prx.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">mobile fronthaul<\/a>) of a city\u2019s networking system \u2014 but internet traffic will travel nearly its entire journey in the veins or arteries (fiber backhaul).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In fact, much like the human bloodstream, only about 11% of traffic is carried by wireless networks,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www2.deloitte.com\/content\/dam\/Deloitte\/us\/Documents\/technology-media-telecommunications\/us-tmt-5GReady-the-need-for-deep-fiber-pov.pdf\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">according to a study by Deloitte<\/a>. The other 90% of internet traffic is supported and carried by the wireline network.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So in a 5G world, the customer experience will be improved by better small cell wireless access points.
